Lightweight Airy Surfaces

An interesting way to create surfaces is to build them with “airy” or “empty areas”. By this I mean to use gauze or cheesecloth surfaces and accentuate the lightness of the surface before applying the precoat. Also you can experiment with a variety of synthetic surfaces and achieve intriguing effects.  

For this video workshop we will look at cheesecloth, melted reemay and synthetic felt. Although synthetics are often melted after printing, these surfaces can be altered before printing. The only parameters for the synthetics is that after manipulating they flow safely through your printers. Take some of the ideas presented and see how far you can take this type of process.

Experimenting with Surface Texture

In this video workshop we well look at a couple of ways to create simple textures on a surface before printing. Fabric, paper and canvas are a few of the surfaces that work well with these techniques. As you add texture keep it thin enough so the surface will fit safely through you printer. 

Once the textures are dry, apply the precoat of your choice—use a carrier sheet and print.

Preparing and Digitally Printing Lightweight Metals Part 2

Continuing with Part Two of "Preparing and Digitally Printing Lightweight Metals" the workshop takes on a video format. This allows viewers a personal look at the print process and all it entails.  Photoshop CC is used for image manipulation. The video illustrates the result of the actual verses the printed images. Using my Epson R3000 I demonstrate how to load the surface through the front feed. This second part of the workshop concludes with varnishing the finished prints.

Preparing and Digitally Printing Lightweight Metal

Exploring digital printing on different types of metals inspires me. Beverage cans have long been my metal of choice and are used in many of my art assemblages. Printing plates are another enjoyable surface to print digitally. The subject of this workshop will be other types of lightweight metals in the 36 gauge range. Copper, brass and aluminum in 36 gauge are really quite nice to print and then work with after printing. Their pliable characteristic adds to my interest for investigating possibilities after they have been printed. 

This is Part One of a Two part workshop. The first part is about preparing the metal and ideas on image selection. The second part is the print process and all the particulars.

Constructing Studies with Digital Prints on Alternative Surfaces

Most of the time my four largest studio tables— 4 x 8 foot (10.160 x 20.320 cm) are end to end with an array of digital prints in various stages of assemblage. Simple Gel Medium Skins

March Workshop of the Month for KathyAnne Art

This video workshop will take you through my process of creating a basic gel medium skin to use for digital printing. This is the simplest form of a skin for printing. You will see the way skins are created and attached to a carrier sheet.

Digitally printed skins can stand alone and are also wonderful additions to all types of mixed media artwork. Try a few and see where this process takes you. Get creative with uses for your printed skins.

Digital Printing Alternative Surfaces: Colored Paper Workshop

Digital printing on colored paper is a magnificent way to develop 

fascinating printed images.  Some papers such as lace are 

fragile to print and many custom hand made papers could

 fall apart when they get wet.  If you coat your fragile paper 

with single strokes and lift the paper quickly and gently to place on flat

 plastic to dry, you shouldn’t have any problems.   This workshop will 

focus on two types of colored paper one fragile and one sturdy. 

Both papers have appealing surface texture before adding the precoat.

Digital Prints and Encaustic Workshop

When working with hot wax and digital prints I loosely call it encaustic since it isn't quite what we think of when we say encaustic.  My set up uses Purified Beeswax and Damar Resin-Encaustic Medium.  Usually for encaustic this medium would be mixed with pigment.  

"By definition- Encaustic (which goes by hot wax painting) is an ancient technique.  The artist heats beeswax to the liquid stage, then mixes in pigmentation.  The resulting medium is applied to a surface."

For encaustic a base like clapboard, wood, ceramics, stretched canvas and other rigid types of surfaces are used.  These rigid surfaces protect the wax from cracking after it cools.  My take on encaustic for this workshop is different than my precious encaustic tutorials and articles.  One of my previous encaustic workshops "Mixing Digital Prints and Encaustic"  used hot wax to combine digital prints on a rigid surface in different configurations.  In this current workshop is a straight forward simple way to combine wax with a non rigid surface..............

Digital Printing Alternative Surfaces:Tyvek

Tyvek is an incredible surface to print.  The prepared tyvek I used is available at Digital Art Supplies in San Diego.  This type of tyvek creates a beautiful matte finished print.  Tyvek has been one of my favorite surfaces because of it's melting properties.  In this video workshop I show how I work with tyvek and then you go your own way to see how you like to heat distress this surface.  There are some finished pieces shown in the video and also the pdf written information.

Creative Digital Printing Part Two

Creative Digital Printing - No Art Printer Required Part Two is about working with lightweight metals.  These metals are soft and thin and will go through a straight pass through printer.  You will need to prepare the metals and attach them to a carrier sheet.  This workshop will show you how to accomplish this.  Remember - using weird things in your printer could cause a problem.  Although I never have a terminal problem there is always a possibility, so take care when performing these techniques.  In the end you will have some wonderful printed surfaces to use in your artwork and projects!

Constructing Simple Surfaces for Digital Printing

In this 20 page pdf mini workshop we will work with simple surfaces that add print dimension with added elements.  Playing with ways to assemble surfaces for printing keeps me looking for new ways to express myself with digital prints.  There are so many things you can do to a thin paper surface, say the weight of a piece of regular inkjet paper.  The surfaces built in this workshop will fit in any regular pass through inkjet printer.  If you think you have made your surface a little thicker then will fit, you have a few choices. ……....

Digital Printing Fragile Surfaces Workshop

Lately I’ve been experimenting with fragile recycled papers and digital printing. In my “Wrap it Up-journals with style” ebook published last month, there is a chapter on recycling paperback book pages by stacking them, gluing them together and painting them.  For myself I’ve then taken those painted book pages and used them for overprinting.  The painted backgrounds are yummy when printed, but no words show.  

What about letting the words peak out from underneath a digital print?  There are lots of books in my studio that can be used to supply pages for printing.  When used on their own, most of these book pages are fragile and too flimsy to print even with a precoat.  The pages need to be glued to others to make them thicker, but that isn’t the effect I was looking for when I started this process.  

I love the feel of fragile papers and the look when they have been printed.  Special care is needed to successfully print the pages and once a few solutions appear this becomes an easy process.
